It was the site of many American Civil War battles, including the Battle of Lookout Mountain and the Battle of Chickamauga. Today, particularly in the northeast portion of the region, tourism feeds the local economy. North Georgia encompasses the North Georgia Mountains region of the state and lies just north of the Atlanta metropolitan area. (Some definitions place Atlanta within North Georgia.)
